October Musky Fishing

On those fantastic Indian Summer days of October, most of us try to get away for at least one day of musky fishing. Check out the stories and photos from some of our trips.

Once in a Lifetime Musky

Our Pal, Mike Lazarus caught this world record muskie in October 2001. It took two guys to bring in this Muskie on October 20, 2001. Ed Barbosa (right) reeled while Mike applied the release gaff. It took both guys to hold this fish comfortably. It bottomed a fifty pound scale, and was estimated to be close to 60 pounds. The fish was 58 inches with a measured girth of 28.5 inches. Because Mike's Profession is a fishing guide, he absolutely refused to give up the location or the technique used to catch this fish. Watago anyway Mike!

Musky Fishing Got All Wet

A day of October 2002 muskie fishing started like any other but quickly got out of hand. While trying to install a motor at the Petrie Island Marina, Al tipped the boat and fell in to the cold October water of the Ottawa River. He went under for a few seconds and there was quite a panic back on the dock, but being the real man that Al Macintyre is, he reappeared with the motor in hand, he never let go of that motor! Check the photo! Al got wet! After a trip back to Rockland to change clothes and lunch, Al and Ron were back at Petrie Island by 3:00 p.m. Fishing was still way off because the drenched motor would not start. Al tried everything to get that motor going but it just wasn't meant to be. In the end, The new owner of Petrie Island Marina lent the boys a motor and they were on the water by 4:30 p.m. They trolled for a few hours and didn't catch a thing!

Ottawa River Musky

Al Macintyre caught this 39.7-pound musky on the Ottawa River near Wendover in about 16 feet of water. He was using the same jointed green Swim-Whizz as he has in the past. He did not have his heavy trolling rod on that day and was using a 7.5 ft spincast rod that he normally uses for salmon fishing. Wow, what a fun time it was to land and release such a large fish with light tackle.

A Perfect photo op from 2000 in Rockland: Al happened on a guy who was alone fishing and had just caught a huge musky. Al being Al, he couldn't resist a photo-bomb.
