The 2018 Gamblorama

Nangor Cottages, Westmeath, ON

What? A Fishing Trip with no Boats?

Another great June trip at Nangor. Early in the new year we learned that Nangor had been sold. Barbara, the owner had sold our favourite June fishing place. We learned that she did not sell the entire resort and kept two cottages. With that, it is no longer a resort but a place with cottage rentals. Still, we had our regular cottages.

With the sale of the resort, they had a problem getting us some working boats, so we ended up fishing from shore. The weather was next to perfect, so shore fishing was a nice change. Still a great variety of fish including some small walleye, sturgeon, smallmouth bass, perch, redhorse, bluegills, bullhead, and channel cats, although most were the cats.

The trip kicked off with everyone receiving door prizes. Each and every person received a gold collectible Donald Trump coin, a kazoo and a gift bag from Die Zoiks Bauernhof. Why all the gifts? The gift bag from Die Zoiks Bauernhof was from the farm of Ron. Even though everyone hates Donald Trump, the coins were just too cool. The kazoos? Just to drive everyone nuts!

It has been an ongoing tradition since almost the beginning where Ron makes pizza for a midnight snack. The style and variety have varied over the years. In the early years he actually made pizza from scratch! That did not last long because it was too time consuming. He moved on to pizza on English muffins and most recently, his pizzas are prepared before the trip and frozen for the trip. The varieties have changed over the years and we have seen all kinds including all-dressed, Hawaiian, chicken club, three-meat and vegetarian. Last year, he introduced us to Philly Steak and Cheese on a bagel. This year, on a request from Big Al, Ron made us homemade Haggis pizza with whisky sauce on a bagel! As gross as it sounds, they were actually good although not everyone was impressed.

Gamblers and fishermen at our 2018 trip at Nangor included all the current regulars: Phil Anderson, Al Davis, Al Heaney, Kyle Heaney, Warren Kidd, Al Macintyre, and Ron Zinn. Phil Anderson took home the canette with a 6.5-pound sturgeon.
