It was Dog Lake Revisited on this year's trip, June 16 to 19. We had so much fun on the 2005 trip to Dog Lake, we just had to try it again. This year, Al reserved just one cabin... the big one. With 9 guys and just 5 beds, some of us had to sleep on the living room couches.
On our 2005 trip, we booked a few boats but hardly used them because the fishing was so great right in front of our cabin. This year we opted out of the boat rentals and we fished from shore off Pike Point. This year it was not the place to be as very few fish were caught.
The big fish everyone was talking about was Al Davis's 6-pound northern pike. Alvin was caught napping when the fish hit. Curt Bowles caught a 3 pound northern pike as well as a two pounder. Billy Hum and Ron Zinn also managed to hook northerns. Did someone say Al Davis won The Canette?
Once again, Ron was the chef again on the 2006 trip. The were mostly meals prepared by him in advance and with breakfasts prepared in the cottage.
Unlike most years, there were no clear winners or losers in the Gamblorama fest, but Ron Malloff was seen leaving early from the trip with a heavy bag of something. We also suspect Whop might have gone out to buy a few more expensive lures after the trip.
Even with the lack of fish, we liked the place and decided to book it again for the 2007 trip. We were told that we were not welcomed back but were not given a reason. The owners were an old couple and we helped them with whatever they asked. Mac, Whop and Ron cleaned the boathouse. We moved boats and equipment, we put the trash at the curb and we even removed the contents of a vacant cottage. All on our fishing trip! Still, we were asked not to come back! We left shaking our heads, wondering how we had pissed them off. After some reflection, the only reason we could think of is that we were not perfect recyclers.
Players and fishermen on the 2006 trip included Phil Anderson, Curt Bowles, Al Davis, Al Heaney, Billy Hum, Ron Malloff, Warren Kidd, Al Macintyre and Ron Zinn.
