The 2008 Gamblorama

Laurentian View Resort, Westmeath, Ontario

More Fish, More Cards... and More Farting!

Scattered thunderstorms kept us off the water for much of the weekend, but it was still a June trip to remember. The area around Laurentian View Resort is known for its abundance and variety of fish, but this year seemed a little better with a dozen or more varieties of fish caught. Species included smallmouth bass, rock bass, walleye, perch, sauger, crappie, bullhead, channel catfish, sturgeon, northern pike, muskie and whitefish.

There seemed to be more of everything on this year's trip: more laughing and jokes, more fish, more cards, more beer, more food, and more farting. We even had more injuries than usual when Al "The Admiral" Heaney accidently put a giant hook through his middle finger. Al had to have the hook surgically removed at the Pembroke Regional Hospital. Al put on a brave face, but we know it had to hurt.

The Admiral catches a hook

Early in the weekend, the Admiral introduced us to an updated version of the Admiral's game. For people that do not know, the Admiral's game is a simple game of "pass the ace" where each person is dealt one card. Each player has an option of passing their card to player to the left of them, just once. The object of the game is not to be stuck with the lowest card. The Admiral's new game was virtually the same, except each player was dealt three cards. The object of this game was not to be stuck with the lowest hand. Could The Admiral's old game be history?

While there were no clear winners in this year's Gamblorama Fest, newcomer Kenny Cross was in serious trouble after the first evening and seemed to wonder what he got himself into by joining his new found friends for a friendly game. Kenny Boy bounced back with a vengeance in the following days winning many huge pots. We don't know how much he walked away with, but we can assume he left Laurentian View Resort with more than he came with. Other Gamblorama winners included Billy Hum and Frank Franchellini, who was seen leaving with a pocketful of toonies.

This year's anglers and gamblers included Phil Anderson, Kenny Cross, Al Davis, Frank Franchellini, Al Heaney, Billy Hum, Warren Kidd, Al Macintyre and Ron Zinn.
