Billy Hum has been attending our annual fishing trip and Gamblorama Fest since the early 1990's. Always an eager fisherman, he never seemed to be able to hook a big one for the trophy... until this year when he hooked into a nine pound cat.
Ron Zinn had been leading for most of the weekend with his 6.5 pound cat until Billy hooked his nine pounder on the last day. Ron did make it exciting when he hooked onto something huge at the mouth of La Riviere Noir, "Something big hooked on and my reel was screaming, I thought he was going to empty my reel before I could bring it in."
The excitement for Ron ended as suddenly as it began when after a few minutes the fish spit the hook and was gone. It left Phil and Whop in the other boat yelling, "Ya didn't set the hook!"
Along with the biggest fish, Billy was also the clear winner in the Gamblorama fest. As always, prize winnings are never revealed, but Billy was seen winning some very huge pots on Saturday evening. Other species of fish caught on the weekend included smallmouth bass, rock bass, walleye, perch, bullhead, channel catfish, sturgeon, northern pike and whitefish.
The trip began on a sad note with the news of the passing of Marjorie Spotswood. Marjorie was the wife of The Laurentian View Resort's owner, Lorne.
Highlights of the weekend included Phil and Ron meeting woman on the river named Christine who caught a 9.5-pound walleye. At the time she seemed like a dream: A beautiful woman blows in on her own bass boat, throws in a line at the mouth of Riviere Noir and within minutes, catches a 9.5 pound walleye.
It seemed like a dream, but this woman was for real. Her name is Christine Cope and her family has a cottage on the Ottawa River.
Also Saturday, Ron met a bear early in the morning, check out the photo below. Frank Franchellini returned for his 3rd trip in a row and Ken Cross returned for a second year. Regulars included Phil Anderson, Al Davis, Alan Heaney, Billy Hum, Warren Kidd, Al Macintyre, and Ron Zinn.
Date: Friday, June 12 to Monday, June 15, 2009

It was 4:30 AM and Ron could not sleep because he was sleeping in the same room as a snoring Admiral. After some tossing and turning, he decided to get up and go for a walk. As soon as he stepped out of the cottage, the bear was there at the boat launch. There was no danger as the bear was doing the same as Ron, he was just out for a morning walk. After a quick photo-op, the bear moved on, probably in search of food.
