The 2010 Gamblorama

Laurentian View Resort, Westmeath, Ontario

Billy Hum sticks it to us again!

Okay so, we really wanted Billy Hum to win something in 2009. He had attended the trip since the mid 90's and had nothing to show, so we encouraged him to fish hard or find the lucky chair. It turns out he did both and took us all at both fishing and the Gamblorama.

Billy Hum

Turn the clock ahead to 2010 and he is still stickin' it to us. Although he didn't catch the largest fish, he certainly left with pails of coins and a bulging wallet. Game after game after game, he just kept winning, and always in that same chair in the north-east corner of cabin number 3. Many people have mentioned that is winning days are numbered.

Fishing was not what we expect of the Laurentian View Resort area as water levels were down by almost a meter from the norm. Endless sandy beaches were seen where we usually see trees hugging the shoreline of the Ottawa. Still many varieties of fish were caught but the larger ones seemed to be at other places on the River. Species caught included smallmouth bass, white bass, walleye, perch, bullhead, channel catfish, sturgeon, northern pike, and carp.

Ron Zinn won the 2010 Canette on the very first fish of the weekend: a 4 pound sturgeon caught at the mouth of La Rivière Noir. Ron also caught another fish of the same weight and variety off the dock of Laurentian View Resort and no one could top it all weekend.

Fishermen on this year's trip included Phil Anderson, Alvin Davis, Frank Franchellini, Al Heaney, Billy Hum, Warren Kidd, Al Macintyre and Ron Zinn.

Al Heaney, for the second time in three years managed to hook a finger. A trip to the Pembroke medical centre was avoided this time as Warren Kidd did the operation on site. Al promises to wear oven mitts while fishing on the next trip. The weather was next to perfect and sunny most of the week-end.
