Our trips have moved around over the years, trying new outfitters looking for the ultimate location to host our annual trip. In recent years we stuck to Lorne Spotswood's Laurentian View Resort in Westmeath, Ontario because of the relaxed atmosphere and great fishing. Lately though, Lorne seems to have turned his place in to a trailer park with lots of seasonal vacationers. The place became less appealing to us because of that, so last year we moved down the river to a similar but much quieter place call the Nangor Resort. Same relaxed atmosphere as Lorne's place once was and still the great fishing of the upper Ottawa River.
Another reason for moving away from The Laurentian View Resort is that the place will be hosting The Pembroke Music Festival later this summer. It is billed as "The largest event of 2013 in Eastern Ontario." There were posters for the event plastered all over the Pembroke/Westmeath area. Because of that, Laurentian View Resort has become a place that a group like ours would prefer to avoid.
Our second June trip to Nangor, Al Heaney dazzled us by cooking some amazing breakfasts and then he cleaned up after!! Ron Zinn dazzled us with an amazing nine card Timber-Out game with an amazing pot. It was Ron's game and he won! Frank Franch dazzled us by not catching a single fish while his on-board fishing buddy caught dozens. How's that possible Frank? Thanks Al, for the great breakfasts! Thanks Ron, for taking our money... and thanks for the chuckle Frank!
Gamblers and fishermen at our 2013 trip at Nangor included all the regulars: Phil Anderson, Al Davis, Frank Franchellini, Al Heaney, Billy Hum, Warren Kidd, Al Macintyre, and Ron Zinn.
Side note to the trip: Around the Sunday Morning breakfast table. Most of the clues in Sunday's New York Times crossword all led to the same word which had Frank in a stuper.
Date: Friday, June 14 to Monday, June 17, 2013
Winner: Ronald Zinn with a 3.5 pound catfish.
